Super Star Lot: Francis Danby (Irish b.1793 - d.1861) An incredible Francis Danby antique oil on board painting circa 1835. Features a German / Swiss river landscape scene with wonderful fine brushstrokes. Signed F. Danby bottom left with antique dealers handwritten note to verso stating '...purchased by Green on my instruction at the Richardson sale at the Manor House, Aborts Leigh. 1967'. Housed in a gilt frame. Danby was an important Romantic artist of the early 19th century with works fetching thousands at notable auctions such as Christies.

Francis Danby ARA (16 November 1793 – 9 February 1861) was an Irish painter of the Romantic era. His imaginative, dramatic landscapes were comparable to those of John Martin. Danby initially developed his imaginative style while he was the central figure in a group of artists who have come to be known as the Bristol School.
