Star Lot: A beautiful antique original Alexander Williams RHA (Irish, b.1846 - d.1930) oil on panel painting titled "The Gap of Dunloe." This traditional rural Irish landscape scene features a cozy thatched cottage left of centre dirt path winding between the lavender grey mountains. Lovely achievement of natural light. Signed bottom right and housed in a fine gilt frame. John Dooley & Sons Ltd framer's sticker to verso. Alexander Williams is a well renowned Irish artist whose work has fetched up to €5,500 at Whyte's.
MM: 44.5 x 26.5 cm including frame.

Raised in Drogheda, Co. Louth, Alexander Williams RHA is well regarded for his talent in landscape and marine painting. However, he was also a successful taxidermist, with a significant collection of his birds and small mammals held in the Natural History Museum in Dublin. Predominantly self-taught, he received just a few evening lessons in drawing at the RDS (Royal Drawing School). His first exhibition took place at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1870 and he would continue to show work there for the next sixty years. Williams relocated permanently to Achill Island in 1899, this landscape having a profound influence on his work and lifestyle. The garden he cultivated there has since become a popular public attraction. There is a video of this lot on our social media pages Facebook, Instagram and tic Tok under South Dublin Auction
