Star Lot: An intriguing antique original pastel sketch titled "Afternoon by the River" by the renowned Irish illustrator, antiquarian and writer Margaret Stokes (b.1832 - d.1900). Features an outdoor leisurely scene of figures relaxing by the riverside, rendered in abstracted forms with loose strokes adding to the sense of movement in the scene. Signed M. S. bottom right and currently held in a smart gilt frame. Verso features further information on the provenance. Stokes has a very strong auction history, with her larger oil works fetching into the early thousands. Some damage to frame.
MM: 40 x 34 cm in frame

Margaret Stokes was first influenced by her cousin, the artist Mainie Jellett, who gave her art lessons from an early age. She was a pupil at The Royal Hibernian Academy School and she won the Purser Griffin Scholarship which she used to attend the Glasgow School of Art and later went to the Edinburgh College of Art where she studied under Joan Hassell, the well known wood engraver and illustrator, and W. G. Gillies, the distinguished Scottish painter. She returned to Dublin and taught at Alexandra College and had private pupils. Margaret Stokes' work was featured in 'Irish Women Artists: 1870-1970' exhibition (2014).
