During the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, young affluent men and couples traveled through Europe on what was known as the Grand Tour. The focus of their travels was primarily Italy and Greece, ostensibly to further their education in classic art and culture, but mostly as an excuse to have a grand time. Along with Old Master paintings, many came home with classical sculptures to adorn their gardens and homes.
