Star lot : A stunning original oil on canvas painting titled "Summer Co Wicklow" by the artist Simon Macleod (1956-). Shows a fabulously rendered scene of horses grazing in a dapple lit field rendered in loose impressionistic brushstrokes. Signed bottom left. Macleod does well at auction, selling in the mid hundreds.
Born in 1956, MacLeod is a graduate of Fine Art in Ireland's National College of Art and Design. Simon MacLeod's paintings have been described as "fragile and subtle masterpieces." MacLeod uses a combination of delicate brushwork and muted earth tones blended together in a style reminiscent of the French Pointillists, Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. These points fuse together to create brilliant canvases depicting a wide range of subjects, whether it is the warm summer light falling between the lush foliage in St. Stephen's Green or the stark contrast between the bare strand and wide open skies at Sandymount. His style is truly unique and highly regarded, he has been awarded the Royal Trust of Canada Award for oil painting, and his work is included in several major public collections including Bank of Ireland, Royal Hospital, the Office of Public Works, and the Dublin Writers Centre at Parnell Square. In recent years, MacLeod has represented Ireland at the Contemporary Irish Art Exhibition in London, Art Expo New York, Art Sydney Australia, and the Beijing Art Salon China.
