Star Lot: A large original oil on canvas of a whispy impressionistic country road complete with horse drawn carriage signed by the artist Norman J. McCaig. McCaig has a long and excellent auction history, with works selling at Whytes and Adam's in the thousands. Housed in a deep cream and gilt frame and in excellent condition.
Norman McCaig (1929-2001) was born in Bangor, Co. Down and painted mainly landscapes, seascapes and harbour scenes. He studied at the Belfast College of Art and the Academy of Art in Paris. McCaig's grand scale and broad horizons, his delicate colour and romantic scenes are probably influenced by his friendship with Joseph Sefton: a set designer who worked for Edith Piaf. Indeed, McCaig's first exhibition was a joint project with Sefton-opening in Paris after his later studies at the Academy of Art Vavin.
