Desmond Hickey attended the National College of Art and Design during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He received private tuition under fellow artist Henry Healy over the course of a five year period which had a significant impact on his artistic output. He also drew inspiration from the 19th century artistic movements, in particular the French impressionists. This is evident in his broad expressive brush strokes and heightened colour palette. He enjoyed painting outdoors, ensuring more immediacy between his work and subject matter.
