Star Lot: A stunning antique original oil on board painting by the famed English landscape painter Thomas Sydney Cooper. This countryside scene is typical of the bovine subjects Cooper is so famous for, showing a cattle herder in a sweeping mountainous landscape. Signed lower right, and housed in a beautiful gilt frame. The verso features a restorers and a wax seal from a collection (seal obscured). Work by Cooper recently sold at Christies for £51,650.
English artist Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803 - 1902) earned the moniker Cow Cooper due to his exercise of almost exclusively painting cattle and farm animals. Cooper established the Canterbury Sidney Cooper School of Art in 1882. In 1833, his artwork made a premier appearance at the Royal Academy, where he commenced to exhibit for many years. Artist Thomas Cooper also showed at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institution. His work is now in prestigious collections such as the Tate in London.
