Star Lot : An antique original Paul Koehler (American, 1866 - d.1909) watercolour on paper painting titled "Sailing Lighters on the Hudson River, New York City Waterfront" dating to c.1880. Features the titular maritime scene of sailboats on a misty morning, rendered in soft, delicate brushstrokes in cool grey tones. Hand signed in pencil bottom right and housed in a smart wooden frame with complementary matting. Further artist information to verso. Koehler has a strong auction history with works fetching into the early hundreds. Very little is known about Koehler, other than that he was a self-taught commercial artist known to have painted a number of detailed landscapes in pastel. He was born in New York City and died in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
