Star Lot: A fantastic original oil on canvas painting titled "Peter's Denial" by the Russian artist Yuliy Vedernikov (b1943) and dated to 1979. Vedernikov worked within the school of Social Realism, the predominant style in USSR from the 1930s to 1980s. The subject matter of the piece is highly unusual for the genre, as it depicts the biblical scene of St Peter denying knowing Jesus three times before the rooster crows, set in contemporary soviet Russia. Jesus can be seen in white, a crown of thorns on his head, being escorted by officers in red uniform. The choice of a biblical scene, a subject frowned upon in the Soviet Union, as well its setting in a contemporary village with townspeople and guards in recognizable 1970s dress, makes this piece a bold political statement. Handsigned bottom left and titled printed on verso.
