Star Lot: A beautiful original antique oil on board painting by the artist Darius Joseph MacEgan (b.1856- d.1939).Titled 'Glendalough'. A sweeping dark rain filled sky pours over the Wicklow landscape to the titular lough in the foreground. Signed by artist bottom right and dated 9 - 4 -1919 to frame on verso. MacEgan has a strong auction history with similar landscapes fetching mid to high hundreds.
Housed in a gilt wooden frame.
Darius Joseph MacEgan, also known as "The MacEgan" (he was the last of a line of direct descendants of the chief of clan MacEgan), was born in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary. He studied at the School of Art in Dublin and later in London. MacEgan was a regular exhibitor from 1881-1939, at the Royal Hibernian Academy, where he showed approx 85 works, predominantly of Irish subjects.
