Star Lot: A magnificent antique original Maurice Canning Wilks (Belfast, b.1910 - d.1984) watercolour on paper painting titled "Donegal Homestead." Features a beautiful study of humble thatched cottage, with the silhouette of pale grey mountains in the distance. Warm sunlit glow of thatched roof wonderfully observed, as are the mountains, rendered with the lightest of touches. Great achievement of natural light, a real strength of this artist, known for his tremendously delicate hand and keen eye. Signed bottom right and titled to verso. Excellently presented in a gilt frame with peephole to verso for viewing of title. Wilks is a beloved 20th century Irish artist whose works have fetched up to €33,000 at auction.

Maurice Canning Wilks was an Irish landscape painter. Born in Belfast in 1910 to a linen designer, he was educated in Belfast at the Malone Public School and attended evening classes at the Belfast College of Art. While attending college he was awarded the Dunville Scholarship allowing him to attend day classes.
