Star Lot: A compelling original Marie Howet (Belgian, B.1897 - D.1984) graphite on paper artwork dating to 1929, featuring a striking portrait of an Achill woman, gazing pensively out of frame. Her expression is wonderfully achieved, with great attention paid to her slightly furrowed brow, pursed lips and fixed eyes, seemingly deep in thought. Signed and dated bottom right and housed in a vintage lacquered frame. Howet is a very well renowned artist both nationally and internationally, with her work fetching into the early thousands.
MM: 48 x 45 cm including frame

Marie Françoise Céline Howet was born in Libramont, daughter of Constant Howet, a doctor, and Pauline Thiry. She received a musical education and learned drawing, attending school in Arlon. Originally she planned to study music but instead chose art and enrolled at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Here she studied under Constant Montald. In her first year she received several prizes, but the outbreak of the First World War led to her family's exile in France. In 1915 she enrolled in the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Howet first arrived in Dooagh, Achill in 1929, and stayed for a few months with Irish nationalist Eva O'Flaherty, where she painted portraits of Annie McNulty and her sister Mary, as well as numerous landscapes of Minnaun, Keem, Keel and the Deserted Village.
