Star Lot: Frank Fitzsimons (Irish, b.1930's). A fabulous original oil on board painting by Fitzsimons (Franfit) featuring a dramatic coastal landscape scene. Rendered in loose gestural brushstrokes with use of thick impasto paint. Signed lower left and housed in an attractive molded gilt frame. Frank Fitzsimons was born in Antrim but was raised in Bangor, County Down during the 1930s. He is a primarily self-taught artist. Fitzsimons joined the Belfast Art Club painting alongside Maurice Wilks. Since then, his style and approach were influenced by Charles McAuley and Frank McKelvey. Fitzsimons taught for several years before he began to show his work in galleries, including the Magee Gallery and the Arches Gallery.
