Hermann Wagner was born in Germany 1943. As the son of a teacher, Wagner was encouraged to take up the study of free painting at the Nuremberg Art Academy in 1961. Soon after his studies, Wagner decided to live between two countries, six months in Germany, six months in Dublin in Ireland. Characteristic of Hermann Wagner's art are large-format paintings that occupy the space and the gaze of the viewer in a special way. He exhibited regularly throughout his lifetime both here in Ireland and his native Germany.
Wagner shared a studio with Irish artist John Nolan for many years.
