Star Lot : A beautiful antique original oil on canvas painting by the Limerick born landscape artist Douglas Alexander (b.1871 - d.1945) featuring a coastal landscape scene of a steep cliff face cutting into the still sea below. In the foreground lies dense foliage, rustling in the coastal wind. Wonderfully achieved with the use of short brushstrokes and contrasting tones to create a difference between the blue grey cliff in the distance and the lush green foliage to the foreground. Signed bottom right and held in an ornate antique carved frame. Alexander has a strong auction history with similar works fetching into the high hundreds, low thousands. .
MM: 63 x 54 cm in frame
Douglas Alexander grew up in a wealthy household in Limerick. He began his working life as an apprentice in the wholesale merchants, J&G Boyd, before later moving to Dublin where he was employed full time as a lithographic by James Walker & Co. Printers. Alexander is best known for his highly skilled oil and watercolour landscapes. He was inspired by the scenery of the West of Ireland, and by the gentle landscape of Connemara in particular, spending much of his time producing paintings of this subject.
